Vielight itPBM: Whole-Brain vs Half-Brain Coverage

May 23rd, 2026

If you are investing in standard tPBM helmets, you likely assume you are optimizing your entire brain. However, from a physics and anatomy standpoint, standard top-down helmets only reach the brain’s outer surface, known as the cortex.

And from an industry-perspective, non-Vielight tPBM helmets might not even reach the brain’s surface. Which has negative consequences on the entire field from a reputational perspective.

Vielight intranasal-transcranial PBM (itPBM) technology is a generational leap over the tPBM field. Our latest educational video explores the power behind Vie-LED technology and anatomical science that set Vielight apart in the field of brain photobiomodulation (PBM) for unrivaled whole-brain coverage, featured in 30+ peer-reviewed studies.

In this presentation, Vielight’s Senior Business Manager, Scott, and Physics Lecturer, John, dive deep into a critical comparison:

The Transcranial Challenge: The Power of Vie-LEDs Many standard PBM devices on the market rely solely on transcranial routes (shining light from the top of the head). However, from a physics standpoint, the human skull (calvaria) is incredibly dense and evolved to absorb roughly 95% of light energy [01:52] by itself. When you add in barriers like hair, skin, and blood, standard lower-irradiance helmets with hundreds of LEDs often fail to penetrate the brain in a meaningful way [02:06].

At Vielight, we engineered our LED modules with unique concave lenses to bypass hair [02:20] with an industry-leading irradiance. Powerful neuro-imaging MRI studies support Vielight’s ability to modulate the brain through the transcranial route, something which many helmets fail to do.

The Intranasal Gateway: Accessing the Deep Brain To reach the deep brain – far from the surface cortex, Vielight’s founder, Dr. Lew Lim, patented a revolutionary solution over a decade ago: utilizing the nasal channel as a gateway for light energy [02:37]. The cribriform plate, located directly above the nasal channel, is the thinnest and most porous bone in the human body [02:50]. When light is directed through Vielight’s patented intranasal applicator, photonic energy passes straight through to reach critical deep-brain structures that are completely unreachable from the top of the head [03:46].

The Chessboard Analogy: Full Spectrum vs. Half-Board Coverage To understand the difference, consider the brain as a chessboard [04:01]. Standard transcranial-only helmets focus entirely on the “black pieces”—the surface-level cortex responsible for functions like language and sensory processing [04:01]. However, they completely miss the “white pieces”—the subcortical power structures sitting deep within the brain’s architecture [04:16].

Vielight’s itPBM technology completes the board, providing full-spectrum coverage to five vital deep-brain areas [04:51]:

  • The Olfactory Bulb: Directly linked to memory and healthy aging [05:12].
  • The Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex (VMPFC): The brain’s executive decision-maker for emotional regulation and risk assessment [05:39].
  • The Hypothalamus: The body’s master thermostat managing sleep, stress, and hormonal balance [05:57].
  • The Hippocampus: The brain’s hard drive, essential for memory formation [06:05].
  • The Brain Stem: The fundamental power plant controlling core alertness and survival functions [06:14].

Backed by Independent Clinical Science The immense impact of this dual-pathway approach is validated by independent research. A recent study conducted by Baycrest Hospital involving 45 participants investigated the brain’s glymphatic system—the essential waste clearance network responsible for flushing out neurotoxic byproducts like amyloid-beta [03:29]. The study revealed that the intranasal channel is 20 times more effective than the transcranial pathway alone at improving brain fluid dynamics [03:11].

Furthermore, this intranasal gateway enables systemic modulation, a systemic approach that allowed the Vielight RX Plus to be licensed by Health Canada as a medical device to accelerate upper respiratory symptom recovery [06:38].
