Introducing the Vie-AI Lab

AI-Enabled BrainNeuralTranscranial Photobiomodulation

We are investigating the optimization of brain functions by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the Vielight photobiomodulation (PBM) ecosystem and cloud.

At the Vielight AI Brain laboratory (“Vie-AI Lab“), we conduct research to translate our findings into machine learning (ML) algorithms.

As the original pioneers in this space, we were granted the patent for closed loop AI-based neuromodulation via photobiomodulation in 2023.

Project Vie-AI: Stage 1

We have conducted IRB-approved studies with the Vielight Neuro Pro, which features industry-leading versatility, power density and form factor.

These studies were based on modifying brain waveforms, which are representable via EEG brain scans in real time.

We have found promising results through our neuromodulation research, which builds on our current published research.

Dr Lew Lim

CEO and Founder

The AI-PBM Process is Patented

Our founder, Dr. Lew Lim, is a former Silicon Valley electrical engineer, entrepreneur and inventor of modern brain photobiomodulation technology.

Besides being the inventor of home-use brain photobiomodulation technology in 2014, he was the first to invent the concept of an AI-based closed loop to optimize photobiomodulation parameters in real time.

In 2018, he described and filed his utility patent, “System and Method for Automated Personalized Brain Modulation with Photobiomodulation” with the United States Patent Office (USPTO, # US 11,633,621B2) and other countries around the world.

The USPTO granted the patent to Dr Lew Lim for his invention, on April 25, 2023. Dr Lim has now assigned this valuable intellectual property to Vielight. South Korea and China have also granted the patent, with more countries to follow.

Vielight AI Patent Summary

The patent recognizes PBM as an effective way to stimulate the brain, capable of modulating it to achieve targeted outcomes, which can be expressed in EEG waveforms, fMRI imaging or clinical measures through brain-computer interfaces (BCI)

As an example, it could cover a device like the Neuro Pro, which comprehensively directs near infrared (NIR) light energy into the brain from a combination of transcranial (through the skull) and intranasal (via the nasal channels) locations.

The device can work in combination with a diagnostic tool (such as EEG and fMRI imaging) to modulate brain function intelligently, automatically, and unrestricted by geographical distances (through the cloud). It is supported by cloud-based backend data analysis and reporting.

Vielight AI Patent Coverage

With the patent, Vielight owns the sole right to develop an automated closed loop PBM system to enable optimum personalized brain functions in the countries that have granted the patent.

The Neuro Pro controller

Research First

The brain is a complex organ, consisting of about 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections. Its complex functions can be expressed as oscillations and waveforms.

We were the first to discover that NIR light energy of sufficient power density can affect the brain in specific ways, as represented by EEG and other brain imaging.

We invest heavily in research and clinical trials to offer the best product for home-use.

Groundbreaking neuromodulation study

We had the honor of pioneering and publishing the world’s first study on neuromodulation via photobiomodulation.

Our Vielight Neuro is the only brain photobiomodulation device supported by published peer-reviewed results for neuromodulation.

Fundamental research

Our research has covered living cells and microtubules (which is an important component to support brain cells of various types)

They also cover biomarkers and metabolites that reflect the health of brain functions and diseases.

Microtubule abnormalities are found in many neurodegenerative pathologies, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Why Vielight Technology Works

We have invested in the most research in the field of brain photobiomodulation to ensure our technology works for our users.

At present, our technology is supported by the most published peer-reviewed scientific evidence in this field of brain photobiomodulation.

  • Cold 810nm LED technology generates an industry-leading power density of 100 mW/cm2 for superior penetration.

  • Modular form factor maximizes contact with the scalp for optimal photonic penetration.

  • Vie-LED technology has been continuously optimized for brain photobiomodulation for almost a decade.

Based on computer modelling, the 810nm wavelength has been found to be superior to other wavelengths that includes 1064 nm for penetration. This was proposed in 2018, and confirmed in 2020. Part of the explanation for the deeper penetration allowed for 810 nm is the low absorbance by blood and water.
A recent study on vascular hemodynamics and cytochrome c oxidase redox activity by the Department of Bioengineering, University of Texas at Arlington examined the effects of different wavelengths within this range with
  • Lasers (800-1064nm | 250 mW/cm2 )
  • 810nm LED (135 mW/cm2)
Results
(1) The 810 nm LED was able to create significant stimulations on vascular hemodynamic oxygenation and CCO redox metabolism despite the LED having a lower irradiance (≈135 mW/cm2)
(2) The dose-dependent trajectory by the 810 nm LED was similar to that by the 800 nm laser.
(3) The LED-triggered increases in Δ[oxCCO] remained at the elevated level without a returning tendency at least during the 5 min post-PBM period. In contrast, the increased Δ[oxCCO] by the 1064 nm laser started returning to the baseline immediately after the cease of the laser.
These findings are encouraging for us – our Vielight Neuro’s rear 810nm LED transcranial diodes generate ≈100 mW/cm2, which approaches the power density of ≈135 mW/cm2 used in the study. It underscores our commitment to fewer well-placed but sufficiently powerful diodes vs many weaker diodes.

Vie-LED technology enables fewer diodes with maximal output and footprint.

Each transcranial LED has an industry-leading power of 1000 mW. It allows us to program radiant power density of up 300 mW/cm2. Although we are currently limiting it to 100 mW/cm2 for safety reasons, we still lead the entire industry.

Our declared values for radiant power density are verified through medical-grade testing and manufacturing certifications.
